He Lived in Humility and Service

Topic: He Lived in Humility and Service

Matthew 20:28 – “Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve…” (NIV)

We are continuing our series on We Owe a Personal Debt where we are looking at how Jesus lived on Earth – drawing lessons on how we ought to live in order to pay the debt we owe God.

Today’s devotional focuses on how Jesus lived a life of deep humility and unwavering service to others. The One who had every right to be served by all chose instead to kneel and serve.

In John 13, we see a staggering moment – Jesus, the King of glory, stooping to wash the feet of His disciples. This was not just a lesson in hygiene but a radical display of humility that turned the world’s values upside down.

He did not chase after power or earthly honor. Instead, He embraced lowliness. He served those who would betray Him, deny Him, and abandon Him. And He didn’t just do it once. It was how He lived every day.

For us, this is not just something to admire—it is something to imitate. We don’t serve to get ahead. We serve because we have received a Savior who washed feet and bore a cross.

Humility does not mean thinking less of ourselves—it means thinking of ourselves less. It means we look around at the people near us and ask, “What does love require of me today?”

Whether it’s picking up what others leave behind, doing something no one will thank us for, or showing up when it’s inconvenient, service is the path Jesus walked—and the one we must walk too.

He emptied Himself of all privileges and chose the path of a servant. If we claim to follow Him, we must choose the same.

Let the world see Jesus not just in what we preach but in how we kneel.

Prayer for the Day

Father, I confess that sometimes I want to be seen, served, and celebrated more than I want to serve. But I ask today for the same mind that was in Christ Jesus – to take on the form of a servant. Help me to walk in true humility and offer my life in service to others. Amen.
