Today’s Jesus is Calling Devotional is on the concept of sin and its detrimental effect on our lives as believers. I trust God to open our eyes to this very important topic.
Topic: Sin is a Reproach
Text: Proverbs 14:34
Key Point for the Day:
The consequences of sin might not affect the sinner alone but people who are connected, related, or associated with him.
There is absolutely nothing that reduces the quality of your life as a person and your walk with God like sin. What is sin? Sin is disobedience to God and His ways.
When you look through the Word of God, you are going to see several cases where sin brought down a man. Starting from Adam, the first man. His sin was that of disobedience to God’s instructions to not eat a particular fruit in the garden.
Adam’s sin not only brought a curse on him but on his wife, Eve, and on mankind. Judah in Genesis 38 slept with his daughter-in-law Tamar who he thought was a harlot only to experience public disgrace after his sin was found out. Imagine what it must have been like for him to find out that he was responsible when he clearly asked that she should be burned because she conceived out of harlotry (Genesis 38:24).
What about Achan? Achan took the things God commanded Israel not to take. His sin did not just affect him but caused the entire nation to lose a battle to Ai. It is funny because when you read the account in Joshua 7:2-13, there was no way Ai could have defeated Israel but because of one man’s sin, it happened.
This shows us a serious narrative about sin. The consequences of sin might not affect the sinner alone but people connected to him.
We understand that the wages of sin is death which means sin brings about death. Now, this death can be manifested in several forms. As believers, we must learn to not give in to sin and trust God to equip us with grace to stay above sin and live in purity and holiness.
If you have a problem with sin, there is no need to feel judged or condemned. That is not what today’s devotional is about. It is to help you see the need to deal with the matter of sin and not get comfortable with it.
The problem with sin is not about falling into it. It is about making it a habit or existing in a shape that makes you comfortable with being a sinner.
For anyone who is currently struggling with sin, there is one thing that is certain, there is grace to fix that issue. See what the Bible says in Romans 5:20;
This means that if there is a sin problem, there is enough grace to handle it. Never feel like sin is more than God’s ability to help you live holy. It will interest you to note that despite how weak you are in the face of sin, God loves you and He is willing to help you avoid sin at all cost.
If you want to take a stand for Jesus today, to say NO to sin, and YES to righteousness, then I want you to say the prayer below:
Father, I know you love me and I do love you too. I also know that my habit of sinning is not bringing you glory and you aren’t pleased when I do these things. Lord, I come to you today to ask for mercy and forgiveness. I repent of my sin and I ask that you give me the grace to say NO to sin. Father, I no longer want to be subject to sin to do its bidding but I want to be subject to righteousness to do your bidding. Thank you, Lord, in the name of Jesus.
If you have said this prayer, I want you to know that God heard you and His Spirit is going to help you to stay true to the words you have just said in prayer.
Remember, sin does not affect the sinner alone but people who are connected, associated, or related to the sinner.
