Seek Him and He Will be Found

Today’s devotional takes a look at the story of Moses and his encounter with the burning bush.

A lot of people wonder how they can hear the voice of God or how they can build a relationship with God. I have been asked that question quite a few times. Recently, I discovered the reason for that question. People hear the idea of finding God but they do not know what it means and while most people will argue with the theological accuracy of the phrase “finding God” it still holds a bit of truth.

The Bible admonishes us to seek God while He may be found (Isaiah 55:6). This means you have to seek God now, if you have not started to do so. However, what many people wonder is, they have prayed, they have studied the Bible but it does not seem like they are finding God.

To get that clear, we need to understand that God is way more interested in interacting with us than we are. Your desire to hear Gid speak to you, to know His will cannot be compared to His desire. In Isaiah 65:24, God says even before you call, He is going to answer and while you are still speaking, He will hear.

One of the reasons a lot of people think they seek God and they do not find Him is because they are expecting something extraordinary. They have heard apostles talk about mind boggling encounters (I do not downplay those) but they are not paying attention to the nudging to pray, the quiet conviction in their heart, the peace that now overwhelms their heart – they do not realize those are also expressions of God already at work in their lives.

I use to be like that. I thought when I finally meet God, I should start calling people’s phone numbers and seeing their problems as I speak with them. This made me look down on the fact that I had a way around explaining scriptures in such a way that even the simplest of people can understand.

It is possible for God to encounter you like Moses, like Saul on the way to Damascus, but remember when God came to Elijah in 1 Kings 19:11. The wind came and broke rocks, an earthquake shook the ground, and a fire burned but God was not in any of those. He was in a quiet, gentle whisper. If you are focused on the God that comes in the wind or the earthquake or the fire, you will miss the God that comes in the gentle whisper.

This is what should be your assurance – if you seek Him, you will find Him.
